Schrodinger’s Client

Ask your client

For anyone who has watched the big bang theory, you’ve heard of Schrodinger’s cat. For those that haven’t, it’s a thought experiment in quantum physics where something can be in two states at the same time. In the experiment, a cat and a vial of poison are put in the box. At some point the vial will break open and the cat will be dead. Until you open the box, the cat is both alive and dead.

Long story long, I think agents see people as either clients or not at the same time but they are afraid to look in the box.

A lot of agents are scared to actually ask the client “are we working together?” They sit there and they just keep showing homes and sending emails and hoping that the person will just want to start working with them. And that’s not the best way to do it.

Until you ask, you won’t know. You need to see if they are working with you. There are several ways to ask. Some are subtle and some are more direct.

  • “Who is opening doors for you.”
  • “If you are to write up an offer, who would write that offer up for you”
  • “I am ready to work for you, are you ready to work together?”

Don’t be scared. This isn’t middle school or high school where you think you know a boy or girl likes you, but you are scared to actually ask “are we going out?” or “will you go out with me?”

You actually want clients to tell you “No” if they are not working with you because you don’t want to spend the time. I implore you, to take that step, to go find out who is your client and who is not. Who is deserving of your time and who is not.
