Egos and Checklists

There’s a really interesting book called the Checklist Manifesto. A man who is a doctor and a pilot realized that checklists are mandatory in the aviation field but not in the medical field.

It’s pretty stupid when you say it like that but yet even when he brought it up to doctors, they didn’t want to use checklists. Their egos were in the way. So he got a study funded where they had doctors use checklists at all different kinds of hospitals all over the world.

The results were clear; mistakes dropped across the board. So checklists were added to every hospital immediately and everyone lived happy ever after. Right?

Nope.

Ego still was involved. They pushed back, felt like children I guess.

Are you egotistical like doctors? Are you above using checklists? I hope not. If you believe that you are the agent that gives superior service, you need checklists to make sure what you said would happen, will actually happen.

The other benefit is that your mind will be able to relax. You will know that items will be taken care of tomorrow so it doesn’t have to stay top of mind all of the time, especially when you are falling asleep.

Get over yourself and dump everything on your to-do list.
