Thais little box holds the key to the home. There are a few different keys that agents can use to open them but all involve an infrared beam. The keys need to be updated for the agent to use it. The key that I have updates itself every 10 minutes or so. Some agents use certain phones that are compatible and there are some palm pilots that are compatible. The phones update themselves daily and the palm pilots have to be updated through a computer.
When the keys are updated, agents knows that the agent has opened his lockbox. This is shown on the web interface that we have. While no lock is 100% foolproof I haven’t heard any stories of anyone gaining access to one and getting in a house.
I had a lockbox that was jammed and it took me a half hour using a saw to cut the side open. And that was the old key. I don’t know if this one is any tougher. Though I don’t imagine it would be any easier to cut it off a door.
In practical terms we know about 80% of the time when a home was shown with 10 minutes of it happening. First we are alerted on our key and then we can log in to see exactly who it was.
And there you go, more information than you ever wanted to know about our “Realtor” lockboxes.
