When they were having the $50 million X PRIZE competition for space flight I wondered who owns the moon, who would have rights to build and if I can try to get the listing? Actually the commute would be a killer.

According to this story, no one owns the moon. There is a an Outer Space Treaty signed by over 100 countries that the moon and other celestial bodies are for mankind. Sounds very congenial but reminds me of the pacts kids make. “When I earn a million dollars I will buy us all Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches for life!”

Now if we actually do start to colonize the moon it may be messier than the Treaty allows. If Russia can say they aren’t invading Georgia on a daily basis when they are advancing I think there could be some issue with land issues on the moon.

There are more acres on the moon than there are people on Earth which is promising and no oceans taking up space. But since we can’t walk outside it is actually silly to have an acre of moon land. It will be interesting to see how it all develops but don’t know if I will see it in my lifetime. I would like to be in space but my astronaut years have passed by me.
