I came across a raffle* (essay contest) for a home in Maui. I am not endorsing it since I know nothing about the home or area but it does have a fanciful quality to it. $100 to give you a chance to own a home in Maui and put your feet in the sand, mmmm.
I was just talking to someone about raffles and my surprise that there aren’t more. I think that some charities like Ronald McDonald House and others could benefit from this. Their organizational abilities and savvy could help get some homes sold and build the charity coffers. Win-win for all involved.
I have written about raffles before and it is one of the my top five searched subjects. They are hard to pull off and in Oregon, you need to have a lawyer involved and a charity as far as I can tell.
* I use the term raffle as a commonly understood term for anytime some has a chance to buy a home for ticket. In this case there is an essay involved. Check out their FAQ page for more details
UPDATE: The essay contest will be covered by the New York Times Thursday.

If you did a simple search you'd find many of these contests including Ronald McDonald House (regional chapters).
You are correct sir. I had checked with a couple of charities before butthey wouldn't doit. Ronald McDonald House seemed like a good fit but they never showed upin a searchfor raffles until I did that specific search.
For anyone interested, there is now a book about home raffles titled, “The Home Raffle Book” and is located at http://www.thehomerafflebook.com. It's a must read for anyone conducting or participating in a home raffle and it includes a sample business plan.
